Lip Blush Blooming Phase Timeline

Lip Blush Blooming Phase Timeline

How long is the lip blush blooming phase? Most of my clients, who are generally pretty healthy, see that nice neutralised lip colour start to kick in properly about 2 to 4 weeks after the peeling finishes, with the fuller lip tattoo colour settling in for good by about weeks 4 to 8. And that’s the short answer I give in the studio – because the real thing that gets people’s attention is that peeling is just the start of the story, not the end.

I’m Olha Po – Founder of Cosmetic Tattoo StudioFace Figurati – in Melbourne, and I’ve been working in cosmetic tattooing since 2016. So if you find yourself staring at your lips after all the flaking has stopped and wondering why the colour looks faint, patchy or rather shy – well, you’re probably just in the normal healing window called the blooming phase – and no, your pigment really hasn’t just vanished into thin air.

Your Colour Usually Takes A Bit To Return

This is the bit I sort of break to first-time clients at nearly every consultation – especially those who are having Lip Blush for the first time and are expecting that final colour to pop up the moment peeling stops. The truth is, the skin is still repairing itself, and the pigment is still settling out with everything else.

In A Nutshell

After the initial peeling phase, lips will often go through what I call a ghosting phase for a few days to two weeks. From there, the visible colour will start to come back between weeks 2 and 4, and the final lip colour you can expect is usually a bit clearer closer to weeks 6 to 8 – that’s normal for Lip Blush and colour-corrective work here in my Melbourne studio.

What’s Going On With The Colour

During the lip blush healing process, the skin on the surface of your lips can make the pigment look cloudy, pale or hidden. Some clients call this the “ghosting” look – but trust me, it’s not that the pigment has disappeared, it’s just the fresh skin sitting on top of the implanted colour while the lips do their thing and rebalance their moisture.

The one thing most people get wrong is thinking that being bright on day 1 means being bright forever, or that being pale on day 7 means the treatment hasn’t worked. Completely not true. Expectation vs reality? Day 1 is going to look bolder, warmer, and yes – maybe a bit more dramatic than it will after it has all healed up, and the healed colour is softer, more natural – and often a lot lighter – 30% to 50% lighter in some cases, depending on the skin and how you look after yourself.

Healing Happens In Stages

If you know what to expect, you’re a lot less likely to freak out and send me some dodgy photos in a panic on day 8 – taken under harsh bathroom lights. The truth is, lip healing isn’t a straight line. It’s more of an inflammation, flaking, ghosting, and then gradual colour stabilisation – and you’re in that healing zone for a bit, before you see the results you’re after.

Day 0 to 10

Right after treatment, your lips look much more vibrant in colour and a bit swollen. Most people can head back to work or go about their day the next day, but don’t expect to be back to normal right away – healing is a slow but sure process. You can start to see the area scabbing or flaking by about day 3 or 5 – but just remember: don’t even think about picking at it. Its not a project for your DIY skills – its your skin, and you need to let it heal on its own.

Weeks 2 to 4

Lip neutralisation and the after-healing phase can be a real test of patience – its the part of the process where it looks like the colour has just sort of… vanished. And yes, it can look a bit uneven, too. For a lot of people, this is the part of the process where its easy to feel like you’re still waiting for the “real” results to kick in – a little trick of the light and the tissue is recovering, and then the whole picture starts to come back together.

Weeks 4 to 8

Now we get to the good bit: assessing the pigment and seeing how evenly its settled. If you’re someone who’s got a bit of a tricky skin tone to work with, I usually tell people to hold off on judging the results until at least a week or so in – and even then its still a good idea to wait and see how things settle down before making any calls. That’s where the magic happens, and your lip colour really starts to shine.

Heavy Pigment Loads Can Cause Colour Migration

To be honest, not everyone is going to bloom at the same pace – and that’s where being upfront and honest is really important. Your skin type, lifestyle, medical history, and aftercare all play a part in how things turn out – and even the weather has a say in it too, especially in Melbourne.

Skin, Pigment, Lifestyle

healing stages of lip tattoo peeling

Oily skin around the mouth area, or chronic lip dryness, or if you just can’t seem to kick the habit of smoking – all these things can impact how long the results last and also how quickly the colour settles. And if you live in Melbourne, you’ll know that the wind and the cold can really dry out your lips in winter, while summer just makes you more likely to end up with sunburn on your lips if you’re not careful.

Here at Face Figurati, we also take into account your natural lip colour – if you’ve got darker or cooler lips, its generally going to take a bit more work to get the neutralisation just right. If you only get one session, you can expect improvement, but perfection will take a bit more time and work. So what’s the best result to shoot for right off the bat? Usually, evenness and tone correction come first, followed by a bit more saturation if the lips heal well.

Aftercare is Key to A Good Outcome

Poor aftercare is right up there among the top reasons for uneven healing. Both industry guidance and our experience here at the studio tell us the same thing: keep those lips clean, avoid putting extra stress on them, and try to keep anything dirty out of the wound. The risk of infection is pretty low if you stick to good hygiene, but it can still creep in if clients touch their lips with dirty hands, start picking at flakes, or try to rush back into bad habits too quickly.

Do keep those lips squeaky clean and use the aftercare product we recommend

Don’t pick, bite or rub at your lips, or eat anything spicy that might irritate them, especially in the early days. And try not to give them a big squeeze with your kisses either.

If possible, try to steer clear of smoking in the early days of healing. It can really irritate the skin and make recovery a bit trickier.

If you’ve got an active cold sore, are feeling unwell, or have any major health issues, it’s best to delay treatment until you’re feeling better.

Top-Ups Matter More Than The Hype

One thing that catches a lot of people off guard is just how normal it is to need a second session. Lip tattooing is usually a multi-step process, not a magic fix that happens in one go. And that’s especially true if you’re looking to neutralise existing work, or if you’re talking about mature lips or someone who’s had previous tattoo work done.

When To Book That Second Session

Normally, it’s around 6 to 8 weeks between the first and second lip blush sessions, once the skin has had enough time to heal. If you book too soon, it can be a bit counterproductive because the tissue beneath the surface is still mending, even if everything looks fine on the surface.

The Reality of Costs and Sessions

Here in Melbourne, a top-notch Lip Blush treatment will usually set you back between AUD 450 and AUD 900 for the initial session, and you’ll also need to factor in the cost of any top-ups, which may be charged separately or included in the studio’s package. You might also consider a lipstick tattoo for a long-lasting lip color option. And then there’s the possibility of needing to correct work that’s gone wrong, which can be a bit pricier because it takes longer and requires a bit more skill and judgement. I’d rather be upfront with you about what to expect than promise you the world and then leave you feeling ripped off.

A normal session usually takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours, including consultation, mapping out your lip shape, discussing colours, numbing the area, and actually doing the treatment. Most people are good to go back to work the next day, but I always recommend taking it easy for a few days if you’re feeling a bit self-conscious about swelling or flaking.

Know When To Get In Touch

Most of the time, changes in the healing process are totally normal, but there are a few things that you should keep an eye out for and get in touch with your artist about. The goal is to be on the lookout for any signs of trouble, without freaking out.

Normal vs. Not-So-Normal Signs

Normal: dryness, a bit of tenderness, some patchiness, and a general sense that things are just going to take a bit longer to get back to normal. Less normal: if the swelling gets worse after the first couple of days, if it starts to feel hot or becomes pus-filled, if you get a surge of pain, or if you get any blistering that doesn’t look like a cold sore. If you spot any of that, get in touch with your technician and, if needed, seek medical advice.

I’ve seen clients go and compare their healing to photos from other studios, or even broad internet research, and end up feeling stressed because their body is doing something different to everyone else’s. That whole comparison game is a total waste of time. The truth is, every skin type, every set of pigments, every bit of lighting, and every medical history is different, and what works for someone else might not work for you. And no, having a champagne-fueled day out in the Swan Valley won’t exactly do wonders for your healing either.

Final Thoughts From My Chair

natural lip blush healed results

If you remember one thing, make it this: the lip blush blooming phase usually lasts a few weeks after peeling, and the final result is best judged around 6 to 8 weeks, not day 7. That slower colour return is normal, especially in lip neutralisation work.

I’m Olha Po, and at Face Figurati, we customise every lip tattoo to suit your natural tone, facial balance, sensitivity level, and healing pattern. Still not sure if Lip Blush is right for you?
